Critical Areas Ordinance

ON MAY 18 2006 the Planning Commission is holding a public hearing regarding the regulations for hazardous trees and for cutting of trees in critical areas. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard. The decisions that result will impact all of Shoreline for decades.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT EACH OF US SUBMIT COMMENTS. They don't have to be original. Just state your opinion.

Summary of the issue:

When Inis Arden was created trees on the property lots were clear cut. Trees in critical areas were left alone because they were "critical areas" that warrented protection for the overall benefit of the community. View lots sold at a higher cost than lots that were located behind the critical areas.

It was understood that the critical areas were to be left intact. Some of the trees are more than 200 years old. If you wanted a view lot, you paid more money and bought a lot closer to the sound. Some property owners purchased lots behind the critical areas (the critical areas stand between their lot and the sound blocking their view).

Some property owners have used the covenance as a tool to try and circumvent the Critical Areas Ordinance so they could have trees removed from within the critical areas and obtain the view they did not pay for.

If successful in their efforts to undermine the CAO, the resulting policies will be applied to all of Shoreline. This could have a profound impact on our watersheds, wildlife, and quality of life.

A large volume of comments have already been submitted from individuals and groups that believe that cutting of trees in critical areas are justified if it means creating a view for property owners.

You can click on the web site below to get to the packet of information that has been distributed to the City Council members. To help you get to the meat of the issues, below is a list of letters already submitted that you will find in the packet and the link to the packet.
