Sustainable LivingIt is possible to live without using up resources faster than they can be recycled back for reuse. It is possible to live in such a way that the environmental services such as cleaning the air and water, producing food and fiber, protecting against floods and disease are enhanced instead of reduced. In a culture of conspicuous consumption, the first question is what do myself and others really need? If buying a new car or plasma TV really met a need than there would be no need to go out and buy a bigger one, a newer one and a more expensive one. What people really need is community and relationships that give them a sense of being valued and belonging. When this need goes unmet, we substitute buying things to validate our worth. Taking buses is not just a saving of oil and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions it also creates opportunity to connect with people you are riding the bus with. Valuing social capital is important in planning new development. Having local grocery stores and coffee shops build social capital. Adding a community room or a playground can mitigate against the isolation of neighbors in high density multiple family housing. Calculate your carbon footprint |
